Dear Chairman Favorite and Vilas County Board
Members,
The Manitowish Waters Lakes Association
strongly urges the Vilas County Board to address the subject
of failing septic systems. Most residents of Vilas County
are required to have their septic systems inspected every
three years (those installed since the mid-1980’s). Yet it
appears that the oldest systems in the county are not
subject to any kind of monitoring or inspection, and these
are the systems that are most likely to be failing. There is
no specific plan in the county to correct this situation
with the exception of required inspections when properties
are sold. Some property owners can avoid this requirement by
placing their properties in trust for their children. We
feel that this situation needs to be corrected by amending
the current county septic inspection ordinances. We have
been made aware through the Vilas County Lakes Association
Newsletter “that the current county computer system,
programs, and personnel have the ability to identify and
notify all property owners not currently required to meet
inspection requirements.”
The mission of the MWLA is to “maintain,
protect, and enhance the quality of the Manitowish Chain of
Lakes and other Township waters”, therefore, we feel that it
is imperative that the Vilas County Board amends the current
County septic system ordinances in order to better protect
the quality of the water in our lakes and rivers. Vilas
County has shown that it can be a leader in the state in
protecting its natural resources. The protection of our
water from possible contamination from failing septic
systems should be a top priority for the County.
In closing, the MWLA urgently requests that
the Vilas County Board amend its septic system ordinances to
provide for inspection of all septic systems every
three years.
Thank you for your consideration of our
request.
Karen Dixon
